Friends, have we talked about my obsession with Disney? No? Then check out this conversation I had with Stephanie Lepp of the Center for Humane Technology about the king company of fairy tales! Here, we unpack what is so enchanting about Disney's stories, how Disney can navigate the culture wars in a healthy way, and how fairy tales are essential to human development in the first place.
My new episode The Truth About Disney and Fairy Tales with Stephanie Lepp is out now - so let's dive in!
This is a decently deep dive into archetypes and the western fascination with "falling in romantic love." Question: if "falling in love" is a medieval idea, where do we place things like the "Song of Solomon" which uses the language of a love poem--language very familiar to anyone who's read any love poem written at any point in history--which is ancient but seems to hint that falling in love may be a more ancient phenomenon that the 13th or 14th century. The PHRASE "fall in love" may be a 13th century term, but the feelings must certainly be older if literature is anything to go by. No?
