You cannot divest.

In his book, ‘These Wilds Beyond our fences’ Bayo Akomolafe suggests we have given up “the rituals of attending to what the world is doing” for “new modern rituals of trying to escape it.”

I’ve thought about Bayo’s work a lot this year and my generation’s yearning to escape the consumerist chokehold that in-forms our being. It informs mine too. It’s inescapable. Im thinking about it especially as I prep for my first burn and buy, well, a shit ton of things I’ll probably only use once or twice.

The call to extract and divest myself from this system is an alluring one but is ultimately fool’s gold that reinforces the same system I’m trying to escape. How? It reinforces the notion that I’m a separate autonomous self who can deny that forces beyond my control make me who I am and shape the choreography of my day. But I am dust and spillage and so are you. The only thing that changes the systems is how we relate to the systems. Tell me what you think below! 🥰🌸🤲🏾📿
