A crowd of people sat behind me as I played volleyball against a crowd of people on the other side of the net. This game was inside.
We were the unfavored and expected to lose. At some point in the game, the crowd behind me had gone from eager participant to lethargic bystander convinced by their own poor performance that they would lose. The same was true for the opponent but in the opposite sense. They sat down entirely and they volleyed from the ground after every pass I sent. They were convinced they would win.
At some point, I was no longer volleying a ball, but a seed from a fruit. It appeared to be a seed from an orange but oranges don’t have massive seeds, so I think it was a peach seed. The other crowd tried from time to time to fudge the numbers and give itself a winning edge by yelling out high scores, but I stayed the course and challnged them.
One dweeby, earnest young man joined me to look for the seed ball under a table after a particular round. He was over his lethargy and ready to join me at the front.
Shortly after, I woke up.
